MOODBOARD - HOSPITAL THEME

DURING THE HOSPITAL RESEARCH IT WAS MENTIONED BY THE SOCIAL WORKERS THAT IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE LUMO FITS INTO THE ENVIRONMENT. THIS MOODBOARD REFLECTS THE MOOD THE LUMO SHOULD REPRESENT. IT FITS WITH THE NATURE THEME OF THE HOSPITAL. ALSO THE MEANING AND USE OF TOUCH ARE IMPLEMENTED IN THE MOODBOARD.






ELECTRONICS

EACH COMPONENT IS CRUSIAL FOR THE INTERACTION AND THE USERS EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE LUMO. THE FUNCTIONALITY OF EACH COMPONENT IS SHORTLY EXPLAINED IN ORDER TO CREATE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE SYSTEM.   

ARDRUINO UNO
THE ARDRUINO CONTROLS THE WHOLE FUNCTIONALILTY, IT IS PROGRAMMED IN ORDER TO LET ALL THE COMPONENTS IN THE RIGHT WAY AND IT ENABLES EACH MODULE TO COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER.  

LED STRIPS
THE LED STRIPS ARE ATTACHTED TO THE PRINT PLATE AND EACH OTHER. IT WILL PROVIDE THE LUMO THE DESIRED LIGHTING SETTINGS, CONROLLED BY THE ARDRUINO.

PRINT PLATE COMPONENTS
THE BLACK BOX CONTAINS A PRINT PLATE WHICH CONNECTS THE SEVERAL COMONENTS AND THE ARDRUINO TOGETHER. 
MICROCONTROLLER
THE MICRO CONTROLLER ON THE PRINT PLATE IN AN EXTRA CONTROLLER IN ORDER TO FILTER THE NOISE GAINED FROM THE SENSOR AND LIMITING THE AMOUNT OF DATA SEND TO THE ARDRUINO.

CAPACITIVE TOUCH SENSOR
THE CAPACITIVE TOUCH SENSOR RESPONDS TO THE TOUCH OF THE USER. I
F THE USER TOUCHES THE PRODUCT THE SENSOR WILL NOTICE A DIFFERENCE AND THE DATA WILL BE SEND TO THE MICROCONTROLLER. HERE THE SIGNAL WILL BE FILTERED AND SEND TO THE ARDRUINO THAT WILL ADAPT THE LIGHT AND THE INTERACTION ACCORDING TO THE AREA THAT IS TOUCHED.   


ELECTRET MICROPHONE

THE MICROPHONE DETECTS THE SOUND OF THE USER. THE MICROPHONE HOWEVER NEEDS AN AMPLIFIER TO MAKE IT MORE SENSITIVE TO THE ENVIRONMENT. THE DATA FROM THE MICROPHONE WILL BE HANDLED THE SAME WAY AS THE CAPACITIVE TOUCH SENSOR. 




LUMO REDESIGN



NEW SHAPE
THE LAST MODEL HAD A QUITE SHARP SHAPE AND SHARP EDGES. THIS WAS NOT REALLY SAFE FOR THE CHILDREN. WE REDESIGNED THE SHAPE INTO A MORE ROUNDED VERSION OF THE LUMO 2.0. THE RENDERS BELOW SHOWS A SHAPE WHICH IS NOT THAT EXTREME AS THE FIRST LUMO 2.0. THE MODEL HOWEVER, SHOWS A MORE EXTREME MOVEMENT, WHICH FITS BETTER TO THE CHILDRENS PREFERENCE OF BEING SURPRISED. ALSO WITH A MORE EXTREME SHAPE, THE MULTIPLE ELEMENTS FIT BETTER INTO EACHOTHER. IT LOOKS LIKE THE ELEMENTS ARE INTERLACED WITH ONE ANOTHER.

SEATS
PREVIOUS RESEARCH ABOUT ERGONOMICS SHOWS TWO DIFFERENT ROUNDINGS, A BIGGER AND A SMALLER ONE [SEE RENDERS]. THE SEATING STILL NEEDS TO BE DESIGNED AND THIS SHALL BE THE NEXT STEP IN OUR PROCESS.

MATERIAL
THE OUTSIDE OF THE LUMO IS LAMINATED WITH WOOD, WHEREAS FOR THE INSIDE HIMACS IS USED. THIS GIVES A NICE CONTRAST. THE INNER SIDE IS GOOD FOR THE LIGHT INTERACTION AND THE OUTERSIDE FITS THE HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENT BETTER.




















ERGONOMICS

DURING THE TOUR IT WAS OBSERVED THAT MANY CHILDREN IN THE HOSPITAL TAKE THE SAME POSITION AS CHILDREN WHO ARE NOT ILL. THEY SIT, STAND, WALK, ETC. THE SAME. WITH AN IV IT WAS A BIT HARDER TO WALK FREELY, BUT THE TUBE HAS A RANGE OF 3METRES. 
THE LUMO HAS TWO DIFFERENT ROUNDINGS AND A DIMENSIONED ACCORDING TO THE DIMENSIONS TAKEN FROM DINED. 












PERSONA'S UPDATE

DURING THE HOSPITAL RESEARCH IT BECAME CLEAR THAT THE TARGET GROUP CAN BE DIVIDED IN THREE GROUPS: CHILDREN IN WHEELCHAIRS, CHILDREN CONNECTED TO AN IV AND CHILDREN WITH NO EXTRA ATTACHMENT. BASED ON OBSERVATION THREE PERSONA'S ARE CREATED.

USER TEST - PART 1

TWO TEENAGERS, WHO WERE GETTING TREATED AT SOPHIA KINDERZIEKENHUIS,  WERE ASKED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE RESEARCH. WE EXPLAINED THE LUMO TO THEM AND THAN ASKED THEM TO PICK 4 PICTURES THEY FOUND APPEALING AND 4 PICTURES WHICH THEY DISLIKED. THEY COULD CHOOSE BETWEEN A PILE OF CARDS WITH PICTURES OF PRODUCTS ON THEM: VISUAL QUALITY SCAN CARDS.  DE CARDS THEY FELT APPEALING ARE:

ELECTRONICS - LIGHT TEST

WITH THE HIMACS PLATES WE TESTED HOW THE LED STRIPS LIGHTS UP THE PLATE. THE LIGHT IS MOST INTENSIVE NEAR THE STRIP EN FADES OUT. TO EVEN THE LIGHT, ALUMINIUM FOIL IS USED. MORE LIGHT TESTS SHALL BE DONE TO HAVE THE BEST RESULT.






HIMACS MATERIAL


TO DO SOME TESTS WITH THE HIMACS MATERIAL, THE PLATES ARE TRANSFERED FROM ARCHITECTURE TO INDUSTRIAL DESIGN.

MODEL 1:1 - PART 1

TO GIVE AN IMPRESSION OF HOW BIG THE LUMO SHALL BE, WE STARTED ON MAKING A 1:1 MODEL MADE OF CARDBOARD. THE MODEL IS STILL UNDERCONSTRUCTION AND WILL BE FINISH  AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THIS IMAGES GIVES YOU AN IMPRESSION OF THE SIZE.
